Sensitive Teeth

Having sensitive teeth can mean anything from getting a mild twinge to having severe discomfort lasting for several hours. You are more likely to feel sensitivity when drinking or eating something cold, having cold air catching your teeth, or sometimes consuming hot foods or drinks. Some people have sensitivity when they have sweet or acidic food and drinks.

The following dental issues can cause sensitive teeth:

  • Gum recession that leaves the tooth root surface exposed
  • Loss of tooth enamel from using a hard toothbrush and an incorrect forceful and aggressive technique (you will be surprised how much damage can be caused this way).
  • Tooth erosion due to highly acidic foods and beverages, or gastric acid (eg bulimia or reflux).
  • Grinding your teeth at night.
  • Tooth decay, worn leaky fillings and broken teeth that expose the inner dentine of your teeth.
  • After dental treatment. This is a common occurrence, especially with procedures such as crowns, fillings and tooth bleaching. However, here at B Dental, we are able to reduce the incidence of this type of sensitivity by utilising careful slower techniques.

This really depends on the cause of the sensitivity. Treatment could be as simple as using a desensitising toothpaste (such as Sensodyne), all the way up to protecting any exposed dentine or nerve ending with fillings or crowns.

If the underlying problem isn’t clearly identified and addressed, it is highly likely sensitivity will progressively get worse. Additionally, depending on the source of your sensitivity, irreversible tooth damage may be caused resulting in eventual tooth loss.
