Bad breath, also known as halitosis, is the presence of a noticeably unpleasant smelling breath odour. In people with halitosis, in approximately 90% of cases it comes from inside the mouth. Halitosis arises from bacteria on the teeth and gums and on the tongue and other areas of the mouth. These bacteria produce volatile sulphur compound (VSC), which is the chemical smell detected in halitosis. Food residues add to the severity of halitosis.
3 Steps to fresher breath:
Step 1: Thoroughly remove plaque using a toothbrush, floss and tongue scrapers. The use of mouthwashes may mask the halitosis temporarily.
Step 2: Increase saliva flow by drinking plenty of water and limit coffee, alcohol and smoking.
Step 3: See your dentist for professional cleaning and management of any gum or periodontal disease. And to diagnose if the halitosis may be from somewhere other than the mouth.
Halitosis may be an indication of underlying dental problems. Consult your dentist to rule out dental decay or periodontal diseases; which could ultimately result in tooth loss. Or to determine if there is an underlining medical condition.
